I'd like to think that a vertical cluster (surface to underground)of signs serves two purpose: as "decoy" when taking each progressive sign individually-- leading to an empty culdesac or dead-end and as a pointer to where the treasure really is--when taken as a whole in the context of the peculiar or specific topographic features of the place and in relation to other clusters of signs whether vertical or horizontal.
